Beveridge Estate

This house was designed by the architectural firm NEU and Gavin Donaldson. The single story 4 bedroom house is 300sqm cleverly positioned to connect with the magnificent native forest on the western and eastern sides whilst looking directly north over the Sand spit estuary to the stunning Mt. Taumahaunga.

A large bi-fold and feature window frames the western forest views. The house was designed for maximum sun and indoor outdoor living to connect with the outstanding natural landscape and bird life. The owners wanted to maximize the thermal performance throughout the year and specified APL Metro thermal heart with Metro Excel glass.

The entrance way features a large bespoke glass clad portico that connects the two buildings and frames the entrance into a beautiful protected walled garden courtyard. The roof features a clever parabolic roof design that provides an overhanging cedar clad eave that wraps right the way around the house and provides nearly 400sqm of rain water collection.

The use of APL roof lights on rain sensors provides for excellent light shafts and ventilation to the interior of the house. The windows maximize the indoor outdoor flow regardless of the wind direction with protection always available in a corner of the house or courtyard.

The courtyard features a bespoke aluminium pergola designed to connect the house to the walled courtyard without compromising natural light. Infrared 4kw heaters are cleverly integrated into the low maintenance pergola which when combined with the wood fire, provide warmth and comfort year round.

The ambient house temperature is a consistent 20-23°C due to the thermal mass provided by the stunning in situ concrete walls. This combines with the thermally broken glass to provide for a year round consistent warmth and cooling.

There is plenty of natural ventilation with the use of sash windows over the sliding doors in all the rooms. The colour palette combines the naturalness of cedar earth tones with flax pod matte joinery and roofing.
